now, mitt romney has never made that claim. this is coming from a report making all kinds of arguments. and he's made all kinds of a assumptions that the romney campaign has rejected. also puts harvey rosen, you can also generate enough growth to avoid a middle class tax increase. there are a loft credible folks saying something else. it's a fact he's going to raise middle class tax. >> the obama campaign, david plouffe is a chris christie of the campaign saying their campaign is built on a tripod of lies and the president has said sometimes they just make things up. >> last i checked, isn't this called politics? you have lying all the time in politics. it is our responsibility to call folks out on it. on my tv 1 show, i have a segment called the biggest damn lie. >> that's got to be a very tough line to draw. >> some lies are much bigger than the others. you have to call folks out on it. here's the problem i have when it comes to a debate. when you hear lies on a debate, they should be called on out on the spot. when you hear

romney campaign is in now. but you can out-debate him. >> we go to kristen welker traveling with the president. we know that the president often has a pretty long day, long hours. news conferences. but how is the president trying to sharpen his message prior to wednesday? >> good morning, tom. i can tell you that's really one of the main goals of this debate camp here in nevada. the obama campaign trying to get the president to give shorter, sharper answers in part so that he can get all of this key points now. they say the president tends to be professorial sometimes. that's what they want to avoid. they want to give direct and crisp answers. also to avoid potentially looking condescending. that's one of the big things they're worried about here. so far president obama has had four mock debates with senator john kerry who is of course no stranger to presidential debates. he also i can tell you had one more practice session last night after president obama had a campaign event in las vegas. now, as you pointed

so did mitt romney. seeing what performances are like, i think the stakes are very high for both men. that's not his problem. his problem is that he is able to have one good day, not two good days. he needs to have a solid wednesday and be solid thursday, friday. otherwise it looks like another fluke. you prepared for one performance but your campaign is in disarray. you don't have answers to questions. you can't give details to policies. but you're making big promises. that's not going to work for governor romney. even if he has a good performance. i think with president obama, the challenge for him to, again, short answers kwb to the point. stay personable as we've seen him on the campaign trail. and call romney out on all the untruths, i'll say that kindly, that we've heard on the campaign trail. >> the one thing, perry, as karen talks about the romney campaign may have taken one step forward then two steps back at times. october certainly needs to be a stronger month than the last three months we've

have you talked to mitt romney? have you given him any advice? are you disappointed how this campaign is running? i know i'm throwing you sort of a curveball because we haven't been talking about that but that is the question of the day all over that he is not making his economic message clear enough. what advice would you give him. >> first of all there is no secret or novelty to the measures. most are passed in the republican house and languishing in the u.s. senate. that is the issue voters will be deciding in 36 days. frankly i don't think there is anything close about this election. there is something very profound going on out there that the polls are just not picking up. i think the election will be decided on the answer to the very same question that ronald reagan posed in 1980, are you better off today than you were four years ago. everybody can answer that question for himself. it is not going to be influenced by ads or by the debate results or by clever spend doctors. i can not imagine the american people want to go another four years

mitt romney so quick to jump on this, the vice president saying we have a class. for the past four years. buried with debt, high unemployment, falling income, you name it. what is it with joe biden, should he just keep his mouth shut? >> i want joe biden to keep talking. he accidentally goes into this truth telling, and i think it is great because we can rely on joe biden. under the heel of the obama economy for four years. we are suffering, joe biden knows this and he forgot to not say . i don't know if all the main street media will report it but we should not slam romney for jumping on it, that is what the vicvice president said. as the one that is what you call a ready-made gift. >> obviously people are soft. up and down the economy. the question really is joe biden to normal folks, who do you trust going forward and who is going to get you out of this? you may make fun of him but he comes out as a fighter. ashley: maybe stick to take other people's speeches, referencing when he plagiarized the uk labor leader speech back in '87. >> i remember that, actually.

mitt romney saying i'm going to do this, open up more lands. yet when i read reports from companies that drill for gas they can't get the equipment to the people there. anyway, do we have as a nation the infrastructure to actually go after more of our own resources? >> we do have. but i think that the industry's kind of solared up here in the last two, three months. we've got plenty of resources. infrastructure in the northeast especially in the marcellus needs to advance a little bit. all that will happen. and now you still have very cheap natural gas prices. it is about 30% of what it is around the world. so very cheap. we have the cheapest energy in america. oil today is $90 a barrel. brent north sea the global price is normal in this country. i know you have the california problem on the gasoline. if i could just comment on that. that's pipelines, refineries and california has a unique problem, which is they have a blend for gasoline that's different than the rest of the united states. so it's not a case you can hurry, ship them some texas

on romney's side the answer is flatly now. if you look at the policies which he did not want to get into on wednesday night, they are not centrist in any way. we had in the clip saying pre-existing conditions are covered under the plan. of course you want to say that. that's a centrist-sounding thing. are they covered under romney's plan? no. he says i'm not offering a tax cut to the wealthy. is that actually true? no. his plan actually would dramatically decrease the tax burden on the wealthy in this country. now, contrast that with obama. contrast that with how he has governed. if he sounds like a centrist in the debate, has he governed more as a centrist. look at health care. he took the individual mandate, a republican idea and proposed a plan and implemented a plan friendly to the private insurance industry. wall street reform. liberals say he didn't go far enough. he mentioned social security. he was willing to cut a grand bargain with republicans last year on social security and medicare. the key point is this, i think.
